Quinta da Beloura
This is the newest golf course built on the Estoril Coast, set in a 60-hectare area halfway between Cascais and Sintra. It was designed by the American architect Rocky Roquemore.
The Quinta da Beloura course forms part of a residential development; it is very flat and so provides a pleasurable but not exhausting game. Its eighteen holes, with excellent views over the Sintra mountain range, extend over 5774 metres for a par 73.
Along its fairways, more than 40,000 trees have been planted. Oaks, pines, palm trees, cedars and magnolias create a beautiful green landscape around the course.
Adding to the beauty of the course, there are lakes dotted over almost its full extent. These are also the spots where golfers will experience greater difficulties. The parallel holes 16 and 17 have narrow fairways with a lake between them, requiring very accurate drives.
At the eighteenth hole, a 372-metre par 4, the green is hidden behind the largest lake, which provides an exciting and beautiful finish to your game.
Penha Longa
Quinta da Penha Longa is a relevant historical site because the first convent of the Order of St. Jerome was built there in 1355 under the responsibility of Father Vasco Martins. King Manuel I ordered a retirement house to be built there, where he went into mourning for the late Queen Mary, the daughter of Ferdinand and Isabel of Spain. King Henrique and King Sebastian spent a long time in the two houses that face the pond of Adens. When the Religious Orders were extinguished, the convent was sold and its second owner was the Count of Penha Longa, Sebastião Pinto Leite, also Viscount of Gandarinha.
Over the past 600 years Penha Longa has undergone several changes and many buildings have been constructed there, such as the Palace, the Church, the Fountain of Tears, the Fountain of St. Gonçalo and the Palace of the Marquis of Angeja.
The famous golf architect Robert Trent Jones Jr. was chosen to design the course.
The course which is 6,290 metres long off the championship tees is somewhat hilly and a certain degree of fitness is required to walk it. But this detail is of little importance when one considers the beauty of the landscape to be enjoyed.
The par-5 6th is benign and seems easy. But beware of being short of the two-levelled and very fast green beyond the lake and before the ruins. On the back nine, like in almost every great golf course, the three last holes are excellent. The 16th, a long par 4 invites players to drive over a valley, this being followed by a rather hard shot, to an elevated green protected by a bunker at the front. The 17th is a 187-metre par 3 that requires great accuracy. Finally, the 18th is a par 5 with a birdie chance depending on the wind strength and direction.
This finish makes every player cudgel his brains.
Quinta da Marinha
Located on the famous Estoril Coast, 25 kilometers from Lisbon, the Quinta da Marinha course was designed by the legendary Robert Trent Jones and is set in a private estate of 110 hectares, wooded with pine trees. The architect has worked on the flat terrain, laying out the course over 5870 metres for a Par 71.
The most spectacular hole on this course is hole number 3, a Par 4 of 334 metres sloping down towards the sea. Once on the green, the golfer has the Atlantic Ocean as background. The whole of Quinta da Marinha’s course is surrounded by beautiful panoramic views. The following hole (a Par 3) requires a very precise shot for the ball to cross a cliff and reach a wide but not very deep green.
For most of the course, however, the fairways face inland with the beautiful outline of the Sintra mountain range forming their background. Many bunkers and a number of lakes make the player’s task even more difficult. Hole number 10, for instance, has a green entirely surrounded by water.
This Course was the 1988 host of the Quinta da Marinha Ladies Masters (European Professional’s Women’s Circuit) and in 2002 was host to the Estoril Open (PGA Tour Event).
